Setting up a candle business during the pandemic: CandescentUK

We’ve seen a huge boom in people setting up side businesses during the pandemic. Candle businesses in particular have been an extremely popular choice, and we’ve seen a huge increase in insurance enquiries to evidence that.

One such business owner is Zoe, who very recently set up CandescentUK in February this year. In this guest blog, she explains the inspiration behind the business, as well as the importance of being covered. Over to you, Zoe…

My name is Zoe and I’m a 30 year old Mum who founded CandescentUK in February 2021 while on maternity leave.

As any woman is, I’m rather obsessed with candles and wanted to create scents that not only fill the room with their gorgeous aroma, but also bring back memories when the fragrance hits you, as well as adding that elegant, chic touch to the home with our minimalistic rose gold design. All of our products are 100% vegan and are made using soy wax.

We recently launched our website and products on 1 May, bringing an initial 10 scents to our Spring Collection, however we have already just added a *bonus* scent! All of our candle scents are also available in wax melts and they come in very sweet bumblebee and honeycomb designs.

As with starting up any business, there is so much to think about and the to do lists can almost seem endless. One thing that was the most important to us is to make sure that we had insurance covered.

As always, we took to Google to start browsing through websites to see who could offer us reassurance and cover us, while keeping the process simple and user friendly. We discovered CraftCover almost instantly and found their website incredibly easy to use and in no time, we had a quote prepared for us and ready to go.

Setting this up was one of the quickest and easiest things we’ve experienced and we’re really happy with the level of cover that CraftCover have managed to provide us as a business and would highly recommend them to anyone, without hesitation!

In terms of challenges along the way to setting up our small business, another big one for us was deciding our selling platform. There are so many online options to choose from and many, many different providers. We have found Shopify to be the best for our particular needs and their support is brilliant as they are available 24/7.

As well as deciding how to sell our products, deciding on a business name is always going to be a tough one. We researched so many different meanings relating to candles etc as we wanted a name that reflected what we sold without necessarily having ‘candles’ in the name. We decided on CandescentUK; candescent meaning ‘glowing with heat, luminous’ which made us instantly think of the warm glow of a candle!

If you are looking at starting up a business, we would highly recommend doing plenty of research for a nice, catchy name to make your business stand out from the others. Another tip we would suggest is to try not to get too carried away at the beginning and buy too much stock/supplies – instead, start off with a few ‘core’ products and keep the remaining ideas jotted down in a notebook for future releases.

In addition to physical products, we also offer Gift Cards on our website. These are great if you’re looking to buy a present for a special someone, a friend or even a family member and aren’t sure what to choose!

Our current scents are:

  • Baby Powder
  • But First…Coffee (we feel this one will be a firm favourite with those tired mums in the mornings!)
  • Dusk (this is one of our premium scents, you’ll see why when you read about it on our website and when you smell it!)
  • Fresh Linen
  • Golden Amber
  • Hawaiian Coconut
  • Jasmine
  • Lemon Zest
  • Lime, Basil & Mandarin (this has been a huge best seller for us and sold out very quickly when we first launched!)
  • Spring Flowers
  • Woodland Walks

Further scent descriptions of each of our candles/wax melts are detailed on our product pages which can be found on our website.

We already have a lot more products in the pipeline that we can’t wait to share with everyone and we’re very excited to launch those!

We would love it if you could check out our Instagram and as always, we appreciate any support we can get, whether it be a like, comment, story mention, follow or even a purchase! You can also follow us over on Facebook.
